All,

sorry for the mass mailing but here are a few take-home messages from
the seminar. And please don't forget to think about your computers at
home:

* If you're admin of your machine, how to check whether your firewall
is up and
    other security things

    http://security.ucsd.edu

click under "firewall config" on the blue bar to the left. This
includes many
    platforms!

* If you do the system upgrades/patches yourself: do them on a regular
basis
   and RESTART your machine.

* Also, to lower the risk of break-ins at IGPP, SIO and elsewhere, now
is a really
good time to change your password..... on ALL accounts/machines you
have,
for your own security and everybody's around you.

* store as few passwords as possible on your computer. This includes
"automatic
logins" through VNC and VPN as well as passwords/personal info stored
in your
    favorite web browser.

* don't forget to do the same with your computer at home!

And thanks again to Gabe and Patrick!

Gabi

PS: also, drop me a note if you think there were issues that still
remain
to be discussed about computers. Perhaps, we could schedule another
meeting/seminar.
