[SIO GP Seminars] New Thursday Seminar Series

In response to the continued desire for a venue for students to  
present/discuss their work in a positive environment we have combined  
what used to be the Informal Geophysics Seminar and Journal Club.  
This restructuring also aims to keep the eventual series of Earth  
Section seminars (by next year, when a joint Geoscience/Geophysics  
seminar will fully be instituted) to a number that most of us could  
reasonably attend on a regular basis.

All Earth Section members are invited to attend the ~noon-time  
research discussions- keep up with current research and provide  
feedback that our upcoming scientists can use as they develop their  
research and presentation skills.

SIO 239. Research Presentation and Discussion

This new seminar course replaces the Informal Geophysics Seminar and  
Journal Club, combining aspects of both in a venue that aims to give  
students practice presenting and discussing research- their own,  
their peer's, and that considered to be a current 'hot topic' or  
'classic' in the literature.

Geophysics graduate students are strongly encouraged to sign up for  
this1-unit course, which will be offered each term. Advisors are  
expected to encourage their students to take advantage of this  
opportunity to improve public speaking techniques and to hone  
critical science assessment skills. All Earth Science graduate  
students are invited to participate. Each student is expected to  
present research at least once a year-- either a 30-45 minute talk on  
their own research or to lead a 20-30-minute discussion on a recently  
published journal article (a list of articles will be provided at the  
start of each term or you may suggest a paper). Informal discussion  
will follow each student research talk, so that the group can ask  
questions and provide input.

The course will meet as close to the previous time of the Informal  
Geophysics Seminar as room availability allows this term- Thursdays  
11:30-12:30, Munk Conference Room.

All Earth Science section members will be notified of the topic for  
each week and invited to attend.
