The Earth Weekly Seminar presents our very own Dr. Kathy Barbeau. Here is
the title of her talk:
"Natural Iron Fertilization in the Southern Ocean: Studies of the Southern
Drake Passage"
In the high-nutrient, low chlorophyll Southern Ocean, the supply of iron to
surface waters is a fundamental biogeochemical parameter controlling the
temporal and spatial distribution of plankton community structure and hence
carbon sequestration. Studying areas of natural iron supply in the Southern
Ocean can improve our understanding of this critical region in the global
climate system. This presentation will describe a collaborative effort to
characterize an area of natural iron fertilization in the Southern Drake
Passage, where off-shelf transport of iron-rich shelf waters and mixing of
these waters into the Antarctic Circumpolar Current creates a distinctive
boundary between low and high chlorophyll waters.
Please join us at 3pm Hubbs Hall 4500 for snacks followed by Dr. Barbeau's
talk at 3:15pm at the same location. We can't wait to see you there.
Cheers,
Cassie
