All,
Apologies if you've already received this update on NSF's ORION
program. SCCOOS will want to stay abreast of the coastal component of
the program, which will hopefully be funded in the next fiscal year.
We may be asked in the coming months to submit materials to the ORION
office regarding the scientific drivers to place ORION/OOI
infrastructure in Southern California, and will keep you informed as
things progress.
best,
Carolyn Keen
--------------
Greetings everyone,
Meg and I hope that the summer finds everyone having a productive and
relaxing season. There has been a great deal of activity on the
ORION front but given the tight time constraints, much remains to be
done.
- An overview of ORION and the meeting results were
published in the latest issue of Oceanography (Oceanography 17(2):
113-120).
- The ORION program office continues to evolve under Ken
Brink s guidance. The ORION office has produced a newsletter, and
the first issue was just released. It can be accessed via the web at
<http://orionprogram.org/>http://orionprogram.org/. The steering
committee has had two meetings so far. The members are listed at the
ORION web site (<http://orionprogram.org/>http://orionprogram.org/).
- The ORION workshop report is evolving. We have received
many of the working group reports. We are expecting several more, so
do not panic if you do not see your efforts yet, but already
everybody s hard effort in Puerto Rico is clearly evident. Meg and I
(with the expert help of Ellen Kappal) plan on trying to finish a
full draft in the next few weeks. We have decided to post the
evolving report for anyone to access as the report evolves into its
final stages. We do this for 2 reasons, first the success of the
meeting was the people present, and the report should reflect the
expert science/engineering/education guidance of those people. Second
as NSF prepares to ask for Letters of Intent for the OOI (to guide
the system engineering efforts for the OOI), we wanted to make all
information we have collected is available to wider community. You
will receive information on those letters of intent in the coming
weeks from the ORION program office. We EMPHASIZE that this report
is a work in progress, and we WELCOME all
suggestions-comments-criticisms. The executive summary is growing
out of Oceanography article. The final report we expect to be ~ 80
pages, but we plan on having a full unabridged report included as a
CD insert if possible. We will post newer versions of the report as
it evolves. We are doing this in the hope to maintain transparency
and to allow all to comment at leisure with a summer drink in hand.
You can access the report at both
<http://orionprogram.org/>http://orionprogram.org/ under the workshop
link (this is the new evolving ORION web site) and at
<http://marine.rutgers.edu/mrs/temp/ORION/orion.htm>http://marine.rutgers.edu/mrs/temp/ORION/orion.htm.
Send us input, and for the self-organizing groups at the Puerto Rico
meeting, let us know what material you want in the report.
- Other ORION news includes that there will a presence at
AGU this Fall and in Paris (June) in the spring at TOS-UNESCO meeting
(come join us for some good wine and conversation!).
- Finally, the potential success of ORION will occur as all
the scientists-engineers-educators feel ownership. So take ownership
as you see fit. We encourage all to send thoughts, concerns, and
excitement onto the Steering committee. The concept of ORION is that
it is the big tent for the diverse ocean community allowing the
diverse exciting efforts to all leverage off each other. Given the
exciting science and important societal issues facing the ocean
community we will need to draw on all our respective talents.
Everyone have a great summer, and we look forward to receiving any
and all input. Sorry to clog the inbox of those who don t care (we
compiled the list from the ORION registration list). Please forward
the message onto any people you might think might be interested.
Please forward replies to me
(<mailto:oscar@imcs.rutgers.edu>oscar@imcs.rutgers.edu) and I will
compile all thoughts and post general updates of the input on the
web, and PLEASE do not reply to all .
Meg Tivey and Oscar Schofield
