Dear SCCOOS Participant,

On November 20-22, UCSD's new Center for Earth Observations and
Applications (CEOA) inaugural symposium will focus on the role of
universities in the science and technology of GEOSS (Global Earth
Observing System of Systems), an initiative endorsed by the U.S. and
nearly 60 other countries to connect satellites, ocean buoys, weather
stations and other Earth observing instruments that are scattered
around the world.

SCCOOS participants and partners are invited to attend this event in
the new Calit2 building on the UCSD campus. The lunchtime keynote
speaker on Monday, Nov. 21, is Michael Jones, Chief Technology
Officer of Google Earth. Speakers during the morning session that day
include: UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox; CEOA Director John Orcutt;
GEOSS Head Jose Achache; Vice Admiral Conrad Lautenbacher of NOAA;
Sam Schuchat of the California State Coastal Conservancy; Ralph
Keeling and Eric Terrill from SIO; and Calit2 Director Larry Smarr.

The symposium brings together academics with industry and government
officials to discuss and examine the roles and responsibilities
necessary for the long-term success of GEOSS.

TITLE: "Science and Technology in Global Earth Observing System of
Systems (GEOSS): The Role of Universities"
DATE: November 20-22, 2005
TIME: Various
PLACE: Calit2 Auditorium in Atkinson Hall, Engineering Courtyard,
UCSD (near Warren Mall)
FEE: None; open to the public, but space is limited.

On Monday afternoon, speakers and interested attendees will break
into working groups to discuss institutional arrangements, science
and technology infusion, standards and protocols, and
cyberinfrastructure and observations. A working dinner follows at
the UCSD Faculty Club. The symposium concludes with a half day
session on Tuesday morning with presentations from the working groups
and general discussion.

About CEOA
Established in the Spring of 2005 at UC San Diego by Chancellor Fox,
and led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, CEOA's mission is to
stimulate, support and coordinate sustained research and applications
in Earth observations. CEOA recognizes that as the science of Earth
observations moves toward more complex and integrated research
programs, it is imperative to create an infrastructure that provides
scientists with support for large-scale projects. Combining the
extensive resources at UC San Diego, CEOA provides a collaborative
framework for the development of large-scale research initiatives
involving partnerships with government agencies, industry, and other
academic institutions.
